Choline Chloride

Choline Chloride is the chloride salt of choline, the highest-loading and lowest-cost choline source on the market. The molecule consists of the trimethylethanolammonium cation paired with a chloride anion.

The molecular formula is C₅H₁₄ClNO with a molar mass of 139.62 g/mol and CAS number 67-48-1. The salt delivers approximately 75 percent elemental choline, the highest of any commercial choline form, and is the dominant choline source in animal feed worldwide.

We source bulk Choline Chloride from top China manufacturers for our partners, working with several of them. The manufacturers are in Shandong and Zhejiang. For this ingredient the minimum order is 17,000 kg and a 20-foot container takes 17 MT, and a smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

Three principal physical formats cover the choline chloride trade.

Aqueous solution at 70 to 75 percent w/w is the original commercial format, suitable for liquid-feed plants and chemical synthesis users. The solution is corrosive to mild steel and is shipped in stainless-steel or HDPE drums and totes.

Dry powder carriers at 50 percent or 60 percent choline chloride are prepared by spraying the solution onto silica, corn cob, vegetable carrier, or rice hull and drying. These are the standard feed-mill formats.

Crystalline choline chloride at 98 to 99 percent assay is produced for human supplement, pharmaceutical, and electronic-grade uses, including deep-eutectic-solvent chemistry. The crystals are extremely hygroscopic and require sealed packaging.

Pharmacopoeial grades meet USP and Ph. Eur. monographs. Feed grades follow regional feed-additive specifications.

Applications

  • Poultry, swine, and aquaculture feed as the primary choline source for growth and liver function
  • Premix manufacture, dosed at 500 to 2000 ppm of complete feed depending on species and age
  • Aquafeed for salmon, shrimp, and tilapia to prevent fatty-liver syndrome
  • Companion-animal feeds for cats and dogs requiring choline supplementation
  • Human dietary supplements as a high-loading choline source
  • Pharmaceutical formulations for hepatic-support indications
  • Parenteral nutrition compounding as a choline contribution
  • Deep-eutectic-solvent systems, paired with urea or glycerol, for green-chemistry extractions
  • Electroplating baths as a leveling and brightening agent
  • Oil-field clay-stabilising additives for drilling fluids
  • Laboratory reagent for cell-culture media and biochemical assays

Brands Using Choline Chloride

How We Help Source Choline Chloride

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your Choline Chloride out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load Choline Chloride together with other ingredients such as Arachidonic Acid, Coenzyme Q10 and Chondroitin Sulphate Sodium into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

Choline Chloride is approved for feed, food, and pharmaceutical use under the major regulatory frameworks.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration accepts choline chloride as GRAS for human food use as a nutrient source. The compound is also listed in the AAFCO Official Publication for animal feed and approved for use in medicated feeds.

The European Union authorises choline chloride as a nutritional feed additive for all species under Commission Implementing Regulation, following European Food Safety Authority opinions. It is also listed among approved choline sources for food supplements in Annex II of Directive 2002/46/EC.

Pharmacopoeial monographs appear in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.).

The compound is non-toxic at use levels but causes skin and eye irritation in concentrated form. The 75 percent solution is shipped as a regulated corrosive in some jurisdictions.

Manufacturing Process

Industrial choline chloride is made by the alkylation of trimethylamine with ethylene oxide in the presence of hydrochloric acid and water.

Trimethylamine and ethylene oxide are sparged into a stainless-steel reactor containing aqueous hydrochloric acid. The reaction is exothermic and proceeds to give an aqueous solution of choline chloride at approximately 70 to 75 percent w/w. The mother liquor is decolorised through activated carbon and polished.

The 75 percent solution is the commercial intermediate. For powder grades, the solution is sprayed onto a carrier (silica gel, corn cob, soybean hulls, or rice hulls) in a rotary or fluid-bed dryer to give a 50 percent or 60 percent free-flowing powder.

For crystalline product, the solution is dehydrated under vacuum and the crystals are recovered by cooling crystallisation, centrifuged, and dried in a sealed environment to limit moisture pickup.

BASF, Eastman, Balchem, and a cluster of Chinese producers (notably in Hebei and Shandong) supply the global market.
