Cyanotis Arachnoidea Extract is a phytoecdysteroid-rich concentrate prepared from the whole plant of Cyanotis arachnoidea, a small herbaceous species in the Commelinaceae family native to southwest China.
The plant is one of the most concentrated commercial sources of beta-ecdysone (20-hydroxyecdysone), the principal ecdysteroid used in sports-nutrition, anabolic-support, and adaptogenic formulas. It has largely displaced spinach and maca-root preparations in the high-purity ecdysteroid supply chain.

Grading is built around beta-ecdysone content, measured by HPLC at 247 nm.
Mainstream supplement grades are 10, 20, and 50 percent beta-ecdysone. The 50 percent grade is the standard grade in the lean-mass and muscle-support category.
Higher-purity grades at 90, 95, and 98 percent are produced for tablet, capsule, and softgel formulas that target a defined milligram dose per serving.
Pharmaceutical-reference material at 99 percent and above sells in gram quantities for analytical use.
Material is a fine off-white to pale-yellow powder with little odour. Higher-purity grades approach pure-white crystalline material.

Regulatory Status
Beta-ecdysone is not a controlled substance and is not on any major doping list. The World Anti-Doping Agency monitors ecdysteroids but has not banned them as of the current list.
In the United States cyanotis extract and isolated beta-ecdysone are sold as dietary-supplement ingredients under DSHEA. Several commercial preparations carry self-affirmed GRAS opinions for limited food-supplement use.
In the European Union beta-ecdysone obtained from Cyanotis arachnoidea received a positive EFSA novel-food opinion in 2022, and an authorisation regulation followed setting maximum levels for use in food supplements for adults.
In China the plant is treated as a regional medicinal herb rather than a food, and supplement use is typically through TCM-style preparations or export-oriented production.
The plant should not be confused with Cyanotis vaga or the various Commelina species, which carry different ecdysteroid profiles.
Manufacturing Process
Cyanotis arachnoidea grows wild in the karst landscapes of Guizhou, Yunnan, and Sichuan provinces in China. Commercial supply now comes mostly from cultivated and semi-cultivated plantings managed for ecdysteroid yield.
The whole plant is harvested when ecdysteroid content peaks, then air-dried and milled to a coarse powder.
Extraction is typically done with 50 to 70 percent ethanol or methanol, sometimes preceded by a defatting step with hexane to remove waxes and lipids.
The crude extract is concentrated under vacuum and loaded onto macroporous adsorption resin. Beta-ecdysone is washed through with dilute ethanol to remove sugars and salts, then eluted with 50 to 70 percent ethanol.
The higher-purity grades go through additional silica or reverse-phase chromatography. The eluate is concentrated and crystallised from methanol or ethyl acetate to yield 90 percent and above material.
For pharmaceutical-reference grades a final recrystallisation step delivers 98 to 99 percent purity with a defined melting point.
HPLC with UV detection at 247 nm (the ecdysteroid lambda-max) is the standard assay against a beta-ecdysone reference.
