Ecdysterone
Ecdysterone, also known as 20-hydroxyecdysone or beta-ecdysone, is a polyhydroxylated steroid that functions as a molting hormone in arthropods and as a defense metabolite in a number of plants.
The molecule (CAS 5289-74-7, formula C₂₇H₄₄O₇, molar mass 480.6 g/mol) is a white to off-white crystalline powder, sparingly soluble in water and freely soluble in methanol, ethanol, and DMSO. It melts with decomposition near 245 °C.
We source bulk Ecdysterone from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturer is in Shandong. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.
Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades
Ecdysterone grades run across a broad purity range.
Spinach and quinoa-leaf extract grades typically deliver 1 to 10 percent ecdysterone and are positioned for mass-market sports-nutrition formulas.
Higher-strength extracts from Cyanotis arachnoidea root deliver 20 percent, 50 percent, 80 percent, and 90 percent ecdysterone (HPLC) and are the standard grades for capsule and tablet manufacturing.
Crystalline material at greater than 95 percent and greater than 98 percent (HPLC) is produced for high-dose muscle-building stacks, clinical-study material, and reference use.
The commercial trade refers overwhelmingly to 20-hydroxyecdysone specifically, with minor co-occurring ecdysteroids (ecdysone, polypodine B, makisterone A) sometimes co-quantified.
Applications
- Sports-nutrition muscle-building stacks marketed as natural anabolic adjuncts
- Capsules and tablets in lean-mass and recomposition formulas
- Pre-workout and post-workout powders combined with creatine, BCAAs, and HMB
- Healthy-aging and frailty-prevention blends for senior consumers
- Nutricosmetic products drawing on skin and hair ecdysteroid research
- Functional foods built around spinach or quinoa-leaf ecdysteroid content
- Veterinary muscle-support supplements for working dogs and equine athletes
- Pharmaceutical research material in metabolic and hepatoprotection programs
- Adaptogenic blends combined with rhodiola, ashwagandha, or eleuthero
- Reference standards for HPLC and LC-MS quantification of plant ecdysteroids

How We Help Source Ecdysterone
Direct Factory Sourcing
We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.
Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer
The manufacturer sends your Ecdysterone out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.
Free Samples and Lead Time
We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.
Combined Shipment
We can load Ecdysterone together with other ingredients such as Arachidonic Acid, Coenzyme Q10 and Chondroitin Sulphate Sodium into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.
Regulatory Status
Ecdysterone is marketed as a dietary ingredient in the United States under DSHEA, typically as an extract of Cyanotis arachnoidea, Rhaponticum carthamoides, or spinach.
In the European Union, ecdysterone preparations occupy a contested regulatory position. The European Food Safety Authority and the World Anti-Doping Agency have both reviewed the substance, and several member states treat isolated ecdysterone above conventional dietary levels as a Novel Food.
The World Anti-Doping Agency added ecdysterone to its Monitoring Program in 2020 and has continued to assess whether to list it as a prohibited substance under category S1 anabolic agents.
The substance is not approved as a drug in any major market.
Athletes subject to anti-doping testing should consult the current WADA Prohibited List before use.
Manufacturing Process
The dominant commercial source is the root of Cyanotis arachnoidea, a commelinaceous plant cultivated in Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou provinces of China. Roots can accumulate 1 to 2 percent ecdysterone on a dry basis, which is exceptionally high among plant sources.
The dried roots are milled and extracted with 70 to 80 percent ethanol or with methanol. The crude extract is concentrated under vacuum and partitioned to remove waxes and chlorophyll.
Lower-strength grades are obtained by spray-drying the partitioned extract onto a carrier.
Higher-strength grades are produced by macroporous resin chromatography (typically D101 or HPD-100), eluting with a stepwise ethanol gradient. The ecdysterone fraction is concentrated and crystallised from aqueous methanol or ethanol.
Greater than 95 percent material requires a final recrystallisation or preparative reversed-phase chromatography step.
Smaller volumes are produced from spinach (Spinacia oleracea), quinoa leaf (Chenopodium quinoa), Pfaffia paniculata (Brazilian ginseng), and Rhaponticum carthamoides (maral root), each with characteristic minor-ecdysteroid signatures.
