Epimedium Extract is a concentrated preparation of the aerial parts of various Epimedium species, a genus of low perennial herbs known in English as horny goat weed and in Chinese as yin yang huo.
The extract is standardised to icariin, the principal prenylated flavonoid of the genus, with related flavonoids epimedin A, B, and C contributing to the full fingerprint.

Common Markets Grades
Epimedium Extract is graded by icariin content as measured by HPLC against a reference standard.
Standard commercial grades include 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 percent icariin. The 10 and 20 percent grades are the most widely used in capsule and tablet formulations.
Higher-potency grades at 80 to 98 percent icariin are produced by macroporous resin enrichment and recrystallisation, primarily for clinical material and as a starting point for icariin derivatives.
Total flavonoid grades are specified separately, typically at 20 to 40 percent total flavonoids including epimedin A, B, C and icariin.
Botanical source is part of the specification. Epimedium brevicornu, E. sagittatum, E. pubescens, E. wushanense, and E. koreanum are the five species accepted in the China Pharmacopoeia, each with a characteristic flavonoid ratio.

Regulatory Status
Epimedium is regulated as a dietary ingredient under DSHEA in the United States. The U.S. FDA has not issued species-specific approvals; suppliers maintain identity controls to confirm one of the pharmacopoeia-accepted species.
Health Canada lists Epimedium species in its Natural Health Products Ingredients Database with monographs covering traditional Chinese medicine use.
The China Pharmacopoeia carries a monograph for yin yang huo that accepts five species and specifies minimum icariin content of 0.5 percent in the dried herb.
The European Medicines Agency has not issued a herbal monograph for Epimedium. Use in EU member states varies, with some countries permitting it as a food supplement and others requiring case-by-case assessment.
Kosher and Halal certifications exist where extraction solvents and carrier systems contain no animal-derived components.
Manufacturing Process
The aerial parts (leaves and stems) are harvested in summer after flowering, when icariin content peaks. The major production regions are Shaanxi, Sichuan, Gansu, and Hubei provinces in China.
Harvested material is air-dried in shade, sorted to remove woody stems and foreign matter, and milled to a coarse powder.
Extraction uses ethanol-water mixtures at 50 to 70 percent ethanol with multi-stage countercurrent reflux. The miscella is filtered and concentrated under vacuum.
For standard flavonoid grades the concentrate is spray-dried directly with a carrier. For higher-potency grades it is loaded onto a macroporous adsorption resin (D101, AB-8, or HPD-100 are typical), washed to remove sugars and pigments, then eluted with ethanol of increasing concentration to recover the flavonoid fraction.
Some producers offer enzymatically processed or fermented Epimedium extract, in which beta-glucosidase converts icariin to icariside II or icaritin. These derivatives are produced separately, often at higher prices, and are distinguished by HPLC profile.
