Feed Enzymes
Feed enzymes are enzyme preparations added to compound animal feed to break down substrates that the animal's own digestive system handles poorly, releasing nutrients that would otherwise pass through and reducing the antinutritional effect of certain plant components. They are a product class covering several distinct activities rather than a single substance.
Phytase is the largest single product, hydrolysing the phytate that locks up most of the phosphorus in cereal and oilseed meal and releases it for absorption, which cuts inorganic phosphate supplementation and phosphorus output in manure. Non-starch polysaccharide enzymes, principally xylanase and beta-glucanase, degrade the arabinoxylan and beta-glucan of wheat, barley and rye that raise gut viscosity in poultry and pigs. Protease, amylase, alpha-galactosidase, mannanase and pectinase make up the rest.
Products come as granulated or coated powders for dry feed mixing and as stabilised liquids for post-pelleting spray application. Thermal stability is the property that decides the form chosen, because feed is conditioned with steam and pelleted at 70 to 95 degrees Celsius, so uncoated enzyme loses activity in the press unless it is intrinsically thermostable or protected by a coating.

Common Markets Grades
The class is graded first by activity and then by thermal protection. Phytase is traded in phytase units per gram across a wide concentration span, with intrinsically thermostable variants, coated granulates rated for a stated conditioning temperature, and liquid grades for post-pelleting application. Non-starch polysaccharide products are sold as single xylanase or beta-glucanase and as blends built for wheat, barley or maize and soy diets.
Physical form follows the mill. Granulated grades of controlled particle size mix evenly into premix and resist segregation, coated grades carry a fat or polymer layer that survives the conditioner, and liquid grades are metered onto finished pellets in a post-pelleting application system. Species-specific blends are offered for broilers, layers, swine, aquaculture and ruminants. Ruminants are the smaller market, because the rumen microflora already supplies most fibre-degrading activity.

Regulatory Status
In the United States feed enzymes are animal food ingredients regulated by the Food and Drug Administration Centre for Veterinary Medicine, with most products marketed under ingredient definitions published by the Association of American Feed Control Officials or through the food additive petition route, and some supported by GRAS conclusions for the specific enzyme and production organism. Labelling of the enzyme activity and the assay unit on the feed tag follows the state feed control rules of the destination market.
In the European Union feed enzymes are zootechnical feed additives authorised individually under Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003, with each authorisation naming the enzyme, the production strain, the target species, the minimum content and the conditions of use, following assessment by the European Food Safety Authority. Authorisations are held by a named applicant and are re-evaluated periodically. Codex has adopted guidance on good animal feeding practice that frames how such additives are handled internationally.
Manufacturing Process
Feed enzymes are produced by submerged fermentation of production organisms selected or engineered for high secreted yield, most often Bacillus, Aspergillus, Trichoderma and Komagataella yeast hosts. A working cell bank is grown through seed stages into a large stirred aerated fermenter charged with a carbohydrate source, an organic nitrogen source and mineral salts, and the run is held under controlled temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and substrate feed until secreted activity peaks, typically over several days.
Recovery removes biomass by flocculation and rotary vacuum filtration or centrifugation, then concentrates and desalts the clarified broth by ultrafiltration. The concentrate is either stabilised and standardised as a liquid, or taken through a granulation step in which it is sprayed onto or mixed with a carrier core, dried in a fluid bed and then film coated with fat or a polymer layer for pelleting stability. Granules are sieved to a controlled particle size, assayed and diluted with carrier to the declared activity before packing.
