Hulled Hemp Seed
Hulled Hemp Seed is the soft inner kernel of the seed of industrial hemp, Cannabis sativa subspecies sativa, with the fibrous outer hull mechanically removed.
The kernel is a dense source of plant protein, with edestin and albumin as the dominant storage proteins, and of long-chain fatty acids dominated by linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid in a ratio close to the often-cited three-to-one range.
The product is marketed under several common names, including hemp hearts, shelled hemp seed, and dehulled hemp seed. It carries a nutty, slightly grassy flavour and a tender texture that hydrates quickly in liquid systems.

Hulled Hemp Seed is graded by visual cleanliness, residual hull fraction, and seed origin.
Food grade A is the premium specification, with residual hull content below 1 percent, off-colour seed below 0.5 percent, and full passage through a standard sieve cleaning protocol. It is the format used for retail packs, bakery toppings, and high-visibility consumer applications.
Food grade B carries slightly higher hull fraction and is preferred where the seed is ground or blended into bars, spreads, and protein powders, since the residual hull is not visible in the finished product.
Organic-certified material is widely available, sourced mainly from Canada, France, and parts of eastern Europe and China.
Origin specifications matter for regulatory and analytical reasons. Producers test each lot for total tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol against the threshold defined by the destination market, with Canadian and European product typically declared under tight THC limits.

Regulatory Status
Hulled Hemp Seed is regulated as a conventional food in most major markets, distinct from cannabis flower and from cannabinoid extracts.
In the United States the FDA has issued GRAS no-objection letters for hulled hemp seed, hemp seed protein powder, and hemp seed oil, all derived from Cannabis sativa grain. The 2018 Farm Bill removed industrial hemp from the federal controlled-substances list, defining it as Cannabis sativa with no more than 0.3 percent delta-9 THC by dry weight.
In the European Union the seed and its derivatives are accepted as conventional food. THC limits in finished foods are set under Commission Regulation (EU) 2022/1393 for hemp seeds and hemp-seed oils.
Canada operates one of the oldest regulatory frameworks for industrial hemp, administered by Health Canada under the Industrial Hemp Regulations.
Organic, Kosher, Halal, and non-GMO certifications are all routinely available. Allergen labelling does not apply to hemp seed in major jurisdictions, and it is widely used as an alternative to tree nuts and sesame.
Manufacturing Process
Industrial hemp is cultivated as either a dual-purpose grain and fibre crop or as a dedicated grain crop. Modern combine harvesters cut the seed heads when the lower bracts have ripened, and the seed is dried to below 9 percent moisture within hours of harvest to prevent rancidity and microbial spoilage.
The dried seed is cleaned over screens, aspirators, gravity tables, and colour sorters to remove chaff, foreign matter, broken seeds, and discolored kernels.
Dehulling is the defining step. The seed is fed into impact dehullers or rubber-roll mills that crack the brittle outer hull without crushing the soft inner kernel. The cracked stream is separated by aspiration and density, with the lighter hull fragments lifted off and the denser kernels carried down.
Multiple passes are typical, and final cleaning by colour sorting removes any residual hull pieces above the specification threshold.
The finished kernel is sensitive to oxidation because of its high polyunsaturated fatty acid content. Industry practice is to package under nitrogen or vacuum in foil-laminated bags and to hold the product under refrigeration or cool storage until use.
Each lot is analysed for moisture, fat, protein, microbiological load, and cannabinoid content. THC testing is run by gas or liquid chromatography against the threshold of the destination market.
