Magnesium Citrate Nonahydrate
Magnesium Citrate Nonahydrate is the fully hydrated form of tribasic magnesium citrate, with the empirical formula Mg₃(C₆H₅O₇)₂·9H₂O and a molar mass of 613.59 g/mol.
It is the form most commonly described in pharmacopoeias, including the United States Pharmacopeia, and the form most likely to be shipped when a buyer orders simply magnesium citrate against a USP monograph. Each formula unit carries nine waters of crystallisation, which lowers the elemental magnesium content to about 11 percent but gives the material its characteristic free-flowing crystalline habit.
We source bulk Magnesium Citrate Nonahydrate from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturer is in Shandong. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.
Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades
Magnesium Citrate Nonahydrate is graded by particle size and pharmacopoeial conformance.
USP grade is the dominant specification, used for oral magnesium citrate solutions, effervescent magnesium tablets, and pharmaceutical capsule formulations. Ph. Eur. grade follows a similar specification with the European Pharmacopoeia identity, assay, and impurity tests.
Coarse crystalline grades, with particle sizes in the 0.2 to 0.8 mm range, are intended for liquid pharmaceutical preparations and saline laxative bottles, where rapid dissolution and low dust generation are both important.
Fine powder grades, with 95 percent of particles passing 100 mesh, are intended for tablets, capsules, and powder beverage mixes.
Food-additive grade conforms to FCC and to the European E345 specification for use as an acidity regulator and sequestrant.
Applications
- Oral magnesium citrate solutions as over-the-counter saline laxatives for constipation relief and pre-procedural bowel preparation
- Effervescent magnesium tablets paired with citric acid and sodium bicarbonate buffers
- USP-monographed pharmaceutical capsules and tablets for daily magnesium supplementation
- Powdered drink mixes targeting electrolyte balance and muscle relaxation
- Magnesium fortification of bottled mineral waters and functional beverages
- Acidity regulator and metal sequestrant in confectionery, jellies, and fruit preparations
- Liquid pediatric and geriatric formulations where dissolution rate and palatability matter
- Sports recovery beverages emphasising cramp prevention and electrolyte replacement
- Sleep and stress-support nutraceutical products in liquid shot format

How We Help Source Magnesium Citrate Nonahydrate
Direct Factory Sourcing
We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.
Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer
The manufacturer sends your Magnesium Citrate Nonahydrate out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.
Free Samples and Lead Time
We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.
Combined Shipment
We can load Magnesium Citrate Nonahydrate together with other ingredients such as Sodium Acetate, Calcium Citrate and Sodium Lactate into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.
Regulatory Status
Magnesium Citrate Nonahydrate is approved for food, supplement, and pharmaceutical use in essentially every regulated market.
In the European Union the nonahydrate is one of the named magnesium sources on Annex II of Regulation (EU) 1170/2009 for food supplements and on Annex III of Regulation (EU) 609/2013 for foods intended for specific groups, including infant and follow-on formulas.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recognises magnesium citrate as GRAS for use as a nutrient, and the oral solution is a well-established over-the-counter saline laxative.
JECFA has reviewed magnesium salts as a group and assigned them acceptable status for use as food additives.
Pharmacopoeial monographs for the nonahydrate appear in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.), with the assay reported on the dried basis to allow direct comparison with the anhydrous form. Halal and Kosher certifications are routine.
Manufacturing Process
Magnesium Citrate Nonahydrate is manufactured by neutralisation, with a crystallisation endpoint chosen to deliver the nonahydrate rather than the anhydrous form.
Pharmaceutical-grade magnesium oxide is slurried in deionized water and dosed with food-grade citric acid in a 3:2 magnesium-to-citrate stoichiometry. The exothermic reaction proceeds without solvent and is monitored to a clear, slightly viscous endpoint.
The clear solution is polished by filtration and treated with activated carbon to drop colour and odour. It is then cooled under controlled agitation, which precipitates the nonahydrate as well-formed crystals.
Crystals are collected by centrifugation or filtration, washed with chilled deionized water to remove residual mother liquor, and dried at low temperature, typically below 40 °C. Drying above this threshold begins to strip waters of crystallisation and shifts the product toward the lower hydrates or the anhydrous form.
The dried crystals are milled to specification and packed into HDPE drums with low-moisture liners.
