It is the same material commonly traded as peppermint oil, but the Latin binomial is preferred in pharmacopoeial monographs, cosmetic INCI listings (Mentha Piperita Oil), and EU food-flavouring registers.

The European Pharmacopoeia monograph for Peppermint Oil specifies menthol 30 to 55 percent, menthone 14 to 32 percent, menthyl acetate 2.8 to 10 percent, and 1,8-cineole 3.5 to 14 percent, with menthofuran capped at 1 to 9 percent and pulegone at no more than 4 percent.
USP-NF, BP, and JP carry parallel specifications with minor numerical variation.

Regulatory Status
Mentha Piperita Oil is one of the most extensively regulated essential oils in commerce.
The European Medicines Agency Community herbal monograph (EMA/HMPC/522409/2013) supports well-established and traditional uses in irritable bowel syndrome and tension-type headache.
The European Pharmacopoeia carries the official monograph 0405 Peppermint Oil. The U.S. Pharmacopeia and Japanese Pharmacopoeia carry equivalent monographs.
As a cosmetic ingredient it is listed in the EU CosIng database under the INCI name Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil. The IFRA standards apply concentration limits for leave-on skin products.
For food use, the FDA recognises it as GRAS under 21 CFR 182.20, and the EU permits it as natural flavouring FL 14.011. Kosher, Halal, and organic certifications are routinely available.
Manufacturing Process
The plant material is harvested at the onset of flowering, when the secretory glandular trichomes on the underside of the leaf carry their peak essential-oil load.
Steam distillation is performed at slight positive pressure, typically for 90 to 120 minutes, in farm-scale stainless stills.
The crude oil is rectified under reduced pressure to remove dimethyl sulphide, propylene glycol residues, and trace pesticides, then chilled and decanted to drop any waxy fraction.
For pharmacopoeial release, each lot is profiled by GC-FID against a panel of marker compounds and by chiral GC to verify the natural (-)-menthol enantiomer.
Material destined for cosmetic supply chains additionally carries an allergen declaration covering limonene and linalool, both naturally present at low levels in Mentha piperita oil.
