SN-2 DHA Algal Oil is a regiospecifically structured triglyceride in which docosahexaenoic acid is preferentially esterified to the central (sn-2) position of the glycerol backbone, rather than the random distribution seen in conventional algal DHA oils.
The sn-2 positioning mimics the natural distribution of DHA in human breast milk and is the premium DHA format for second-generation infant and follow-on formula systems.

SN-2 DHA Algal Oil is differentiated from conventional algal DHA by its regiospecific fatty acid distribution rather than by total DHA assay.
The signature specification is the proportion of DHA at the sn-2 position, typically reported at 55 to 80 percent of total DHA, compared with roughly 33 percent for randomized triglycerides.
Standard infant-format grade delivers 35 to 45 percent total DHA with a defined sn-2 enrichment factor and parallel low-EPA specification.
High-purity grade reaches 45 to 55 percent total DHA with comparable sn-2 enrichment, used in premium toddler and growing-up milk systems.

In the European Union the underlying algal DHA holds authorised novel food status under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, and structured triglyceride variants are typically supported by additional safety dossiers under the same regulation.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has accepted GRAS notifications for structured DHA triglycerides intended for infant formula and general food use.
EFSA authorised health claims for DHA covering brain function, vision, and infant development apply to the structured oil on the same terms.
Codex Alimentarius infant formula standards permit structured DHA oils as optional ingredients subject to the same compositional and contaminant limits as conventional DHA.
Manufacturing Process
Production begins with conventional algal DHA oil from Schizochytrium, Aurantiochytrium, or Crypthecodinium cohnii fermentation, refined to standard infant-grade purity.
The oil is then enzymatically restructured using an sn-1,3 regiospecific lipase, most commonly an immobilized lipase from Rhizomucor miehei or Thermomyces lanuginosus, which selectively hydrolyses the outer positions of the triglyceride.
Free fatty acids are liberated from the sn-1 and sn-3 positions, separated from the diglyceride intermediate by short-path distillation, and the diglyceride is then re-esterified with a tailored mixture of medium-chain or oleic-rich fatty acids to give a structured triglyceride with DHA concentrated at the sn-2 position.
The restructured oil moves through final molecular distillation to remove residual free fatty acids and lipase-derived byproducts, followed by bleaching, deodorisation, and antioxidant stabilisation.
Quality control routinely includes pancreatic lipase positional analysis or chiral-phase HPLC to confirm the sn-2 DHA enrichment specification.
