Sodium Trimetaphosphate

Sodium Trimetaphosphate (STMP) is a cyclic three-unit phosphate with the formula (NaPO3)3, in which three phosphate tetrahedra share bridging oxygens to form a closed six-membered ring.

The cyclic structure gives STMP a unique chemical profile within the sodium phosphate family. It carries no terminal acidic or basic groups, dissolves to a near-neutral solution, and is primarily a cross-linking agent for starch and protein rather than a sequestrant or pH modifier.

We source bulk Sodium Trimetaphosphate from top China manufacturers for our partners, working with several of them. The manufacturers are in Jiangsu and Sichuan. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

STMP trades in two qualities, food grade and industrial grade.

Food-grade STMP is the dominant commercial volume, used principally as a starch cross-linker in modified-starch manufacture. The grade meets FCC, FAO/WHO, and Codex purity specifications with minimum 95 percent assay.

Industrial-grade STMP is used in detergent builders, water treatment, and metal finishing, with wider tolerances on impurities.

Particle size ranges from fine powder to granular. Most modified-starch plants prefer fine powder for rapid dissolution in the starch slurry, while larger granular grades are used for dust-free automated dosing.

STMP is produced anhydrous and is moderately hygroscopic, requiring sealed storage.

Applications

  • Cross-linking agent in modified food starch manufacture (E 1410, E 1414, E 1422)
  • Hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate production for clean-label thickeners
  • Cross-linking treatment of fibre and protein gels in plant-based meat and dairy
  • Bone-density supplement formulations as a phosphate source
  • Toothpaste as a remineralisation phosphate
  • Industrial deflocculant in ceramic, clay, and cement applications
  • Water-treatment sequestrant in cooling-tower formulations
  • Metal-cleaning and rust-removal baths
  • Textile-finishing and dyeing as a hard-water modifier
  • Plant nutrient delivery in horticultural blends

China Manufacturers of Sodium Trimetaphosphate

How We Help Source Sodium Trimetaphosphate

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your Sodium Trimetaphosphate out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load Sodium Trimetaphosphate together with other ingredients such as Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Sodium Hexametaphosphate and TetraSodium Pyrophosphate into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

STMP is approved as a food additive and processing aid in major regulated markets.

The European Union does not assign STMP a separate E number, but it appears as a permitted reagent in the manufacturing rules for modified starches E 1410 (monostarch phosphate), E 1412 (distarch phosphate), E 1414 (acetylated distarch phosphate), and E 1442 (hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate).

The U.S. FDA permits STMP as a starch modifier under 21 CFR 172.892 with explicit dose limits expressed as residual phosphorus in the finished starch.

JECFA includes STMP within its group evaluation of phosphate additives.

FCC monographs cover identity, assay, and impurity limits. Halal and Kosher certifications exist for food-grade material.

Manufacturing Process

STMP is produced by thermal condensation of monosodium orthophosphate followed by controlled cooling to favour the cyclic trimer over linear chains.

Monosodium orthophosphate is prepared by partial neutralisation of food-grade phosphoric acid with sodium carbonate at a 1:1 mole ratio. The solution is concentrated and dried.

The dried salt is calcined at 550 to 650 degrees Celsius. The reaction eliminates water and condenses the phosphate units, but unlike STPP or SHMP production, the conditions are tuned to favour ring closure rather than chain growth.

The molten product is cooled in a controlled programme that promotes crystallisation of the cyclic trimer phase. The cooled solid is milled, sieved, and tested by X-ray diffraction or 31P NMR to confirm the trimetaphosphate phase content.

Some processes use a small fraction of a recycled trimetaphosphate seed to nudge the crystallisation toward the desired phase.
