Alginate Oligosaccharide

Alginate Oligosaccharide, commonly abbreviated AOS, is a low-molecular-weight depolymerisation product of sodium alginate. The oligomer chain typically runs from 2 to 25 sugar units, well below the gelling threshold of intact alginate.

The shorter chain length gives full cold-water solubility, low viscosity, and a bioactive profile linked to immunomodulation, prebiotic activity, and plant-growth promotion.

We source bulk Alginate Oligosaccharide from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturers are in Shandong. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

AOS is graded by average degree of polymerisation and by M/G composition.

Short-chain AOS at DP 2-8 is used in clinical nutrition, dietary supplements, and dermatology, where bioavailability and skin penetration matter.

Medium-chain AOS at DP 8-15 is the standard for agricultural biostimulants and animal feed additives.

Longer-chain AOS at DP 15-25 is used in functional beverages and cosmetic actives where mild viscosity contribution is acceptable.

Purified mannuronic-rich and guluronic-rich fractions are also offered for research and high-value pharmaceutical use.

Applications

  • Dietary supplements for prebiotic and gut-microbiome support
  • Functional beverages with immunomodulatory positioning
  • Cosmetic actives for skin barrier and anti-inflammatory claims
  • Wound-healing topical formulations and gels
  • Agricultural biostimulants for crop yield and stress resistance
  • Animal feed additives for gut health and growth performance
  • Aquaculture feed to support shrimp and fish immunity
  • Clinical nutrition products targeting metabolic and inflammatory conditions
  • Pharmaceutical research as a bioactive carbohydrate
  • Hair and scalp care formulations

How We Help Source Alginate Oligosaccharide

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your Alginate Oligosaccharide out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load Alginate Oligosaccharide together with other ingredients such as Carrageenan, Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose and Agar Agar into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

AOS does not have a dedicated food-additive number because it is treated as a depolymerised form of alginate rather than a distinct additive.

In China, several AOS preparations are approved as new food ingredients and as veterinary feed additives. In the European Union, AOS for cosmetic use is covered by general INCI listings; food use must follow the novel food procedure.

United States status varies: some preparations have self-affirmed GRAS for dietary supplement use. Agricultural use is governed by national biostimulant regulations.

Manufacturing Process

AOS is produced by controlled depolymerisation of food-grade sodium alginate. Three principal methods are in commercial use.

Enzymatic depolymerisation with alginate lyase gives the cleanest oligomer profile and the tightest molecular-weight distribution. It is preferred for pharmaceutical and high-end cosmetic grades.

Acid hydrolysis is the lowest-cost route, used for agricultural and feed grades. It gives a broader oligomer distribution and requires careful neutralisation.

Oxidative depolymerisation with hydrogen peroxide and metal catalysts is an intermediate route, common in China for cosmetic and supplement grades. After depolymerisation, the product is desalted, concentrated, and spray-dried.
