Cell wall broken Ganoderma lucidum spore powder is the reproductive spore of the reishi mushroom, Ganoderma lucidum, that has been mechanically ruptured so that the contents of the spore become accessible.

The intact spore is an oval body of about five to eight micrometres enclosed in a double sporoderm wall built largely of chitin, which is highly resistant to digestion. Breaking that wall is the entire point of the ingredient, because the constituents of commercial interest, the triterpenoid ganoderic acids and the beta-glucan polysaccharides, together with spore lipids, sterols, protein and trace selenium, sit inside it. The powder is fine, deep purplish brown to reddish brown, with a distinctly bitter taste and a faint mushroom odour. It is only partly water soluble; the polysaccharide fraction disperses while the triterpene and lipid fractions do not, so it is dosed as a suspension or encapsulated rather than dissolved. Once the wall is broken the exposed lipids oxidise, so the material is packed under nitrogen and protected from heat and light.

Manufacturing Process

Spores are collected rather than harvested. Mature reishi fruiting bodies, grown on hardwood logs or on sawdust substrate blocks under controlled humidity, release spores over a period of days once the cap edge has matured. Growers enclose the beds or fit collection hoods and draw the released spores into collection chambers, then screen the collected powder to remove substrate fragments, insect debris and mycelial material. Raw spore powder is dried to low moisture and held cold before processing.

Wall breaking is the defining step. The modern route is low temperature mechanical disruption, using high speed impact mills, vibration ball mills or airflow collision mills operated under chilled conditions and often under inert gas, since heat degrades the triterpenes and accelerates oxidation of the newly exposed lipids. Enzymatic pretreatment of the chitin wall is sometimes used ahead of milling to lower the mechanical energy required. Broken material is verified for wall breaking rate by microscope count, then sterilised, usually by a short low temperature steam or irradiation treatment where the destination market permits, and dried again. Where a de-oiled grade or spore oil is the target, the broken powder is extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide, which strips the triterpene rich lipid fraction and leaves a defatted solid. Both streams are sieved, blended and packed under nitrogen.
