Choline Dihydrogen Citrate
Choline Dihydrogen Citrate is the monocholine salt of citric acid, pairing one choline cation with one dihydrogen citrate anion in a one-to-one stoichiometry.
The molecular formula is C₁₁H₂₁NO₈ with a molar mass of 295.29 g/mol and CAS number 77-91-8. The salt delivers approximately 35 percent elemental choline and is valued for being less hygroscopic and gentler in taste than choline chloride or bitartrate.
We source bulk Choline Dihydrogen Citrate from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturers are in Shandong. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Common Markets Grades
Standard supplement-grade choline dihydrogen citrate is a white to off-white crystalline powder at 99 percent assay, with chloride and sulphate impurities held below 0.1 percent.
Fine-milled grades below 100 microns serve effervescent tablets and instant-drink mixes, where the citrate counter-ion contributes both buffering and flavour.
Direct-compression grades at 200 to 400 microns suit tablet and capsule fills. The reduced hygroscopicity, relative to other choline salts, makes choline citrate the preferred input for moisture-sensitive matrices such as effervescent and chewable tablets.
USP and Ph. Eur. grades meet pharmacopoeial monographs for identity, assay, and impurity profile. Kosher and Halal certifications are routinely available.
Applications
- Effervescent multivitamin tablets and powders, where the citrate buffers the acid-base reaction
- Cognitive-health and nootropic stacks blended with phosphatidylserine and B-vitamins
- Liver-support supplements at 250 to 500 mg per serving
- Prenatal supplements as a low-irritation choline source
- Pediatric and geriatric chewable tablets, where taste tolerance matters
- Sports-nutrition products for neuromuscular signaling support
- Powdered instant beverages and electrolyte sticks
- Functional gummies and pastilles where the citrate complements fruit flavours
- Medical-food formulations for metabolic-disease management
- Veterinary supplements for cats, dogs, and horses
- Pharmaceutical compounding where chloride exposure must be minimised

How We Help Source Choline Dihydrogen Citrate
Direct Factory Sourcing
We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.
Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer
The manufacturer sends your Choline Dihydrogen Citrate out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.
Free Samples and Lead Time
We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.
Combined Shipment
We can load Choline Dihydrogen Citrate together with other ingredients such as Arachidonic Acid, Coenzyme Q10 and Chondroitin Sulphate Sodium into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.
Regulatory Status
Choline Dihydrogen Citrate is permitted as a choline source in dietary supplements and food fortification under the main regulatory regimes.
The European Union lists choline citrate among the approved choline sources for food supplements in Annex II of Directive 2002/46/EC and for infant and follow-on formula under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/127.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recognises choline as a nutrient and accepts choline citrate as a GRAS source. Both choline and citrate carry independent food-use clearances.
Pharmacopoeial monographs for Choline Citrate appear in the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.), the British Pharmacopoeia, and historical United States Pharmacopeia editions.
Halal and Kosher certifications are routinely available. The citrate counter-ion is plant- or fermentation-derived and avoids the chloride and tartrate considerations of other choline salts.
Manufacturing Process
Choline dihydrogen citrate is produced by neutralising aqueous choline base or choline hydroxide with citric acid in a controlled one-to-one molar ratio.
The choline base is produced either as an aqueous hydroxide solution from a dedicated production line or as the freshly liberated base from an ion-exchange treatment of choline chloride. The acid is added with stirring under temperature control, and the pH is brought to the dihydrogen-citrate stoichiometric point.
The resulting solution is decolorised over activated carbon, polish-filtered, and concentrated under vacuum. Crystallisation is induced by controlled cooling, occasionally with seeding to direct the crystal habit toward free-flowing prisms.
The wet cake is centrifuged, washed with cold water or chilled ethanol-water, and dried in a fluid bed. The dry powder is milled to specification, screened, and blended for assay uniformity.
Producers include Balchem in the United States, Jost Chemical, and several Chinese specialty-nutrient houses serving the European supplement market.
