Earthworm Protein is an extract prepared from the body of the redworm Lumbricus rubellus, and in some product lines from related species such as Eisenia fetida or Pheretima species, processed to recover a soluble protein fraction enriched in fibrinolytic enzymes.
The fibrinolytic activity is the commercial driver. The enzyme complex, generically known as lumbrokinase or earthworm fibrinolytic enzyme, is the basis for the ingredient's positioning in cardiovascular and circulation-related products.

Activity is typically reported in fibrinolytic units measured against a urokinase reference standard or by a fibrin plate assay. Standard supplement grade commonly delivers 200,000 to 600,000 units per gram.
High-activity grades reach into the millions of units per gram and are differentiated by the degree of enzyme enrichment achieved through chromatography or selective precipitation.
Total protein content is a secondary parameter, usually reported at 30 to 70 percent depending on whether the product is a crude extract, a defatted concentrate, or a purified enzyme fraction.

Regulatory Status
The regulatory status of earthworm protein and lumbrokinase is unusually fragmented and customers should treat it carefully.
In China, di long (dried earthworm) is a listed traditional Chinese medicine in the national pharmacopoeia, and certain lumbrokinase-containing pharmaceutical products are approved for specific clinical indications. These approvals do not transfer to other jurisdictions.
In the United States, lumbrokinase is not approved as a drug. It is sold as a dietary supplement ingredient, and structure-function claims are subject to the standard dietary supplement framework. It is not a recognised pharmaceutical and finished products may not make disease treatment claims.
In Japan, lumbrokinase-containing products are produced within the functional food and supplement framework, not as approved pharmaceuticals.
The European Union has no novel food authorisation for earthworm-derived protein at the time of writing, and operators considering EU supply should expect novel food review for new product formats. Several EU member states explicitly do not permit lumbrokinase supplements.
Allergen and dietary considerations are also relevant. The ingredient is not suitable for vegetarian, vegan, Halal, or Kosher positioning.
Manufacturing Process
Production starts with the farming of earthworms, typically Lumbricus rubellus or Eisenia fetida, in controlled vermiculture facilities. Worms are starved for one to several days before harvest to clear the digestive tract of substrate material.
The cleaned worms are washed, ground, and extracted in chilled aqueous buffer at controlled pH. Temperature control is critical because the target enzyme complex is heat-sensitive and rapidly loses activity above 45 degrees Celsius.
The crude extract is filtered and centrifuged to remove insoluble debris. Further purification combines ammonium sulphate precipitation, ultrafiltration, and ion-exchange or hydrophobic-interaction chromatography to enrich the fibrinolytic enzyme fraction and remove pigments, lipids, and lower-molecular-weight contaminants.
The enriched fraction is freeze-dried or spray-dried under conditions that preserve enzyme activity, typically with the addition of stabilisers such as trehalose or mannitol. Production is concentrated in China, with significant capacity also in Japan and South Korea.
