Ferrous Fumarate

Ferrous Fumarate is the iron(II) salt of fumaric acid and a high-density source of supplemental iron for prenatal, pediatric, and adult hematinic products.

The compound, CAS 141-01-5, is a reddish-orange to brown-red odourless powder of formula C4H2FeO4. It carries roughly 33 percent elemental iron, which is the highest mass fraction among the common organic iron salts and well above ferrous sulphate heptahydrate.

We source bulk Ferrous Fumarate from top China manufacturers for our partners, working with several of them. The manufacturers are in Shaanxi, Jiangsu and Henan. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

Pharmaceutical grade ferrous fumarate complies with USP, BP, and Ph. Eur. monographs and is the format used in tablets, capsules, and chewables. Particle size is typically controlled in micronized and standard milled cuts to suit direct compression versus wet granulation.

Food fortification grade meets FCC specifications and is engineered for low solubility in finished food matrices, which suppresses iron-catalysed off-flavours in cereals and bars.

Coated and microencapsulated grades use hydrogenated vegetable oils, ethylcellulose, or maltodextrin shells to mask the metallic taste and to slow dissolution in chewables and ready-to-drink products.

Granular free-flowing grades are tailored for high-speed tablet presses where the standard powder would bridge in the hopper.

Applications

  • Prenatal multivitamins and standalone prenatal iron tablets, where high iron per tablet keeps the dose form small
  • Pediatric iron supplements, chewables, and gummies thanks to its low water solubility and reduced metallic taste
  • Adult iron tablets and capsules for treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia
  • Therapeutic infant cereals and follow-on formulas, particularly in markets where ferrous sulphate causes unacceptable colour change
  • Fortified breakfast cereals, nutrition bars, and meal replacement powders
  • Medical foods for inflammatory bowel disease patients and post-bariatric surgery iron repletion
  • Veterinary oral iron products for companion animals and livestock
  • Sports nutrition products positioned around endurance and oxygen transport
  • Hospital and clinical-nutrition tube feeding formulas

China Manufacturers of Ferrous Fumarate

How We Help Source Ferrous Fumarate

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your Ferrous Fumarate out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load Ferrous Fumarate together with other ingredients such as Sodium Acetate, Calcium Citrate and Sodium Lactate into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

Ferrous Fumarate is a permitted source of iron in food supplements and fortified foods in essentially all regulated markets.

In the United States, 21 CFR 184.1307a lists it as affirmed GRAS for use as a nutrient. It also appears as an active pharmaceutical ingredient in numerous monograph drug products.

The European Union permits it as a source of iron in food supplements under Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006 and in infant and follow-on formulae under Regulation (EU) No 609/2013.

JECFA has evaluated ferrous fumarate and assigned it acceptable status as a source of iron for nutritional use.

Pharmacopoeial monographs appear in USP, BP, Ph. Eur., and JP. Halal and Kosher certifications are routinely available, and most material on the market is suitable for vegan labelling.

Manufacturing Process

Industrial synthesis is a straightforward acid-base reaction. Fumaric acid is suspended in water and neutralised with a freshly prepared solution of ferrous sulphate or ferrous chloride together with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate. The reaction is run under a nitrogen blanket to suppress oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III).

The crude ferrous fumarate precipitates as a fine reddish-orange solid, is filtered, washed with deoxygenated water, and dried under vacuum at modest temperature. Dried powder is then milled to the target particle size distribution.

A common quality control point is residual ferric content, which is kept below 2 percent by tight redox control during synthesis. Residual sulphate, chloride, and free fumaric acid are also monitored against pharmacopoeial limits.

The fumaric acid input is itself produced industrially by isomerisation of maleic anhydride hydrolysate, making the overall route fully synthetic and well suited to GMP manufacture.
