Ferrous Sulphate

Ferrous Sulphate is the iron(II) sulphate salt and the workhorse source of supplemental iron used in oral hematinics, food fortification programs, and industrial water treatment.

The heptahydrate form FeSO4 7H2O, CAS 7782-63-0, presents as pale blue-green crystals historically called green vitriol. It delivers roughly 20 percent elemental iron by mass, which is the benchmark every other iron salt is compared against on a cost per milligram basis.

We source bulk Ferrous Sulphate from top China manufacturers for our partners, working with several of them. The manufacturers are in Jiangsu. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

Pharmaceutical heptahydrate complies with USP, BP, and Ph. Eur. monographs and is the standard input for tablets, syrups, and pediatric drops.

Dried ferrous sulphate, a partially dehydrated grade carrying about three to four waters of crystallisation, raises iron content to roughly 30 percent and is preferred for direct compression and capsule filling because it is less hygroscopic than the heptahydrate.

Food grade heptahydrate is produced under FCC specifications for flour and rice fortification and for breakfast cereal premixes.

Feed grade material, often in granulated or coated form, is used in poultry and ruminant diets at lower purity.

Technical grade monohydrate dominates non-food channels: pigment manufacture, cement chromate reduction, and municipal wastewater phosphate removal.

Applications

  • Oral iron supplements for treatment of iron deficiency anemia, sold as tablets, modified-release capsules, and liquid drops
  • Mass fortification of wheat flour, maize flour, and parboiled rice in national public health programs
  • Breakfast cereal and infant cereal premixes where cost per milligram of iron is the driver
  • Prenatal and adult multivitamins at the budget tier
  • Veterinary injectable and oral iron preparations for piglets and calves
  • Cement manufacture as a chromate reducer to limit hexavalent chromium in finished cement
  • Municipal and industrial wastewater treatment for phosphate precipitation and odour control
  • Pigment industry as the precursor to iron oxide reds, yellows, and blacks
  • Lawn and turf moss killers and as an iron source in horticultural fertilizers
  • Historical and artisanal use in iron-gall ink, leather tanning, and wood staining

China Manufacturers of Ferrous Sulphate

Company names and logos are the property of the manufacturers themselves. They are listed here because our own directory records them as producing this ingredient. A listing is not an endorsement by them, and we do not represent them or speak on their behalf.

How We Help Source Ferrous Sulphate

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your Ferrous Sulphate out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load Ferrous Sulphate together with other ingredients such as Sodium Acetate, Calcium Citrate and Sodium Lactate into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

Ferrous Sulphate is approved as a nutrient and dietary supplement in essentially all regulated markets.

In the United States it is GRAS for use as a nutrient under 21 CFR 184.1315 and 21 CFR 184.1307c, and is the iron source named in the FDA standards of identity for enriched flour and enriched rice.

The European Union lists it as a permitted source of iron for food supplements under Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006 and for infant and follow-on formulae under Regulation (EU) No 609/2013.

JECFA has evaluated ferrous sulphate as a food fortificant and a source of iron in supplements.

Pharmacopoeial monographs appear in USP, BP, Ph. Eur., JP, and IP. Halal and Kosher certifications are routinely available.

Manufacturing Process

The dominant industrial route is recovery from titanium dioxide manufacture by the sulphate process. Ilmenite ore is digested in concentrated sulphuric acid, and after the titanyl sulphate is hydrolysed to TiO2, the spent liquor crystallises large volumes of ferrous sulphate heptahydrate as a co-product. A single sulphate-process TiO2 plant can output several hundred thousand tons of copperas per year.

The second route is pickle liquor recovery from steel finishing. Hot-rolled steel is descaled in sulphuric acid baths, generating a spent acid stream rich in dissolved iron that is crystallised to heptahydrate and sold into water treatment and fortification.

Pharmaceutical and food grade material is typically produced by recrystallising technical heptahydrate from acidified water under a nitrogen blanket, then partially dehydrating under vacuum to reach the dried grade target water content.
