Guanidinoacetic Acid (GAA, C₃H₇N₃O₂, CAS 352-97-6) is the direct biosynthetic precursor of creatine and the only intermediate on the pathway from arginine and glycine to phosphocreatine.
In the body, GAA formed in the kidney is methylated in the liver by guanidinoacetate N-methyltransferase using S-adenosylmethionine as the methyl donor. Supplementation with GAA bypasses the rate-limiting first step and raises creatine status with high efficiency.

Feed grade is by far the larger volume, sold to broiler, swine, and aquaculture integrators at 96 to 98 percent purity in free-flowing crystalline form. The principal commercial brand is CreAMINO from AlzChem, registered as a zootechnical additive in the European Union.
Human-supplement grade typically assays at 99 percent or higher with tighter limits on dicyandiamide and heavy metals. It comes micronized for capsules, stick packs, and pre-workout blends, often paired with a methyl donor such as betaine or methylfolate.
Pharmaceutical-reference material at 99.5 percent purity sells in small lots for analytical and clinical-trial use.

Regulatory Status
GAA carries a sector-specific approval framework that differs between feed and food use.
In the European Union Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/1768 and later amendments authorise it as a zootechnical feed additive for chickens for fattening, weaned piglets, and pigs for fattening, following EFSA FEEDAP opinions. The U.S. FDA recognises GAA under AAFCO ingredient definitions for use in poultry and swine feed.
For human use, GAA is sold as a dietary supplement ingredient in the United States under DSHEA, with NDI notifications on file from major suppliers. It is not authorised as a novel food in the European Union and cannot be marketed there as a food supplement without an approval under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283.
The substance is not listed by WADA. It is generally co-administered with a methyl donor in human supplement formats to avoid depleting S-adenosylmethionine pools during methylation to creatine.
Manufacturing Process
Industrial GAA is made by the reaction of cyanamide with glycine in aqueous medium.
The two precursors are combined under controlled pH and temperature to give crude guanidinoacetic acid, which crystallises on cooling and acidification. The crystals are washed, recrystallised, and dried to yield the finished free acid.
Process control focuses on residual cyanamide, dicyandiamide, and ammonium chloride, all of which are managed below pharmacopoeial and feed-additive thresholds. The route uses no animal-derived inputs and is therefore suitable for vegan and Halal labelling.
AlzChem at Trostberg, Germany operates the principal European plant under the CreAMINO brand. Several Chinese producers in Jiangsu and Shandong supply commodity feed-grade material at lower cost.
