Manufacturing Process
Production starts with the fermentation of PQQ as the free acid by methylotrophic bacteria such as Hyphomicrobium denitrificans. Mitsubishi Gas Chemical's commercial process, the basis of BioPQQ, uses a proprietary high-yielding strain optimised through decades of development.
After fermentation, the broth is clarified by membrane filtration and the acid is recovered through ion-exchange chromatography. The eluate is concentrated under vacuum and acidified to precipitate the free acid in high purity.
The acid is then converted to the disodium salt by titration with food-grade sodium hydroxide in aqueous solution. Careful pH control during this step is critical to avoid degradation of the redox-active quinone.
The salt solution is filtered through a 0.2 micron sterilising filter, concentrated, and crystallised. The final crystalline product is dried under vacuum at low temperature and packaged under nitrogen.
