Calcium Alpha-Ketoglutarate
Calcium Alpha-Ketoglutarate is the calcium salt of the TCA cycle intermediate alpha-ketoglutarate (Ca(C₅H₅O₅)₂ in the anhydrous form, CAS 71686-01-6). The monohydrate is the most common commercial hydrate state, with about 12 percent calcium content by weight.
It is a white to off-white crystalline powder, sparingly soluble in cold water and more soluble at gastric pH. The salt form moderates the acidity of the free acid and adds an organic-acid calcium source to the finished formulation.

Manufacturing Process
Calcium Alpha-Ketoglutarate is manufactured by neutralising fermentation-derived alpha-ketoglutaric acid with food-grade calcium hydroxide or calcium carbonate in aqueous solution.
The reaction is carried out under controlled temperature and pH to ensure complete neutralisation and to avoid degradation of the keto-acid. The resulting calcium salt precipitates from the reaction mixture and is recovered by filtration or centrifugation.
The crude salt is recrystallised from purified water to remove residual mineral impurities and to set the desired hydrate state. The crystals are then dried under controlled humidity to lock in the monohydrate form.
Final product is milled to the target particle size distribution for the intended application, with coarser cuts preferred for direct-compression tablets and finer cuts for capsule filling.
