Lactic And Fatty Acid Esters Of Glycerol

Lactic And Fatty Acid Esters Of Glycerol, commonly abbreviated LACTEM, are food emulsifiers produced by esterifying glycerol with both lactic acid and fatty acids. They carry the European food additive number E472b and are valued for whipping and aerating performance in dairy and confectionery systems.

The material is a soft solid or a paste, depending on the parent fatty acid profile. The lactic acid head group introduces an additional hydroxyl functionality that lifts the hydrophilic character of the molecule while maintaining the fat-anchored monoglyceride backbone.

We source bulk Lactic And Fatty Acid Esters Of Glycerol from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturers are in Guangdong and Henan. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

LACTEM is graded by physical form, lactic acid content, and parent fatty acid source.

Standard solid grades take the form of beads, flakes or powder for direct addition to confectionery and whipped product formulations. Soft paste grades serve dairy aeration and whipping cream applications.

Source fatty acids may derive from palm, soybean, sunflower, or rapeseed oil. The choice of source determines the melting point and aeration window of the final material.

Selected grades are produced with documented monoester content above 60 percent for premium whipping cream and toffee applications, with the higher monoester fraction delivering finer foam structure and improved overrun.

Applications

  • Whipping cream and aerosol whipped topping bases
  • Sponge cake, angel food cake, and chiffon cake batters
  • Toffee, caramel, and chewy confectionery centres
  • Cake mixes and frozen cake batter
  • Frozen dessert and ice cream aeration
  • Mousse and souffle dairy systems
  • Aerated chocolate confections
  • Bread improver blends for crumb texture
  • Coffee whitener and creamer aeration
  • Imitation cream and non-dairy whip systems
  • Pharmaceutical aerated foam preparations
  • Cosmetic mousse and whipped product formats

How We Help Source Lactic And Fatty Acid Esters Of Glycerol

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your Lactic And Fatty Acid Esters Of Glycerol out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load Lactic And Fatty Acid Esters Of Glycerol together with other ingredients such as Polyglycerol Esters of Fatty Acids, Non-Dairy Creamer and Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

LACTEM is approved as a food additive under E472b in the European Union for general food use at quantum satis, with specific restrictions on certain product categories.

The United States Food and Drug Administration lists lactic acid esters of monoglycerides and diglycerides under 21 CFR 172.852 as a permitted food additive with defined identity and purity specifications.

JECFA evaluated the lactic and fatty acid esters of glycerol and concluded that an intake limit was not required.

The Food Chemicals Codex carries a monograph for lactic acid esters of mono and diglycerides covering identification and purity tests. Kosher and Halal certifications are widely available, with non-GMO and organic documentation offered for plant-source grades.

Manufacturing Process

LACTEM is produced by esterifying glycerol with both lactic acid and fatty acids in a single reactor sequence.

The most common industrial route starts from distilled monoglyceride and adds anhydrous lactic acid in a stirred reactor at 130 to 160 degrees Celsius under inert atmosphere. The reaction generates water as the byproduct, which is removed under reduced pressure to drive the esterification to completion.

Reaction time runs from 2 to 6 hours depending on the target degree of lactic acid esterification. Polylactic acid chain formation is controlled by reaction temperature and lactic acid dosing rate.

The finished product is filtered, cooled, and shaped into beads, flakes, paste, or powder. Quality control covers acid value, free glycerol, free fatty acid, total lactic acid, and saponification value.
