Manufacturing Process
Mono And Diglycerides Of Fatty Acids are produced by glycerolysis of fully refined edible oils with food-grade glycerol.
The chosen oil and an excess of glycerol are charged to a stirred reactor with a small amount of alkaline catalyst such as sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide. The reaction is carried out under inert atmosphere at 200 to 240 degrees Celsius.
The transesterification reaches equilibrium with the formation of monoglycerides, diglycerides, and a residual fraction of triglycerides and free glycerol. The catalyst is neutralised with phosphoric or citric acid, and the excess glycerol is recovered for reuse.
The crude product is bleached, deodorised, and standardised for monoester content. Distilled grades carrying monoester content above 90 percent are produced by additional molecular distillation under high vacuum at low temperature.
