Oil Soluble Chlorophyll is the free-acid form of plant chlorophyll dispersed or dissolved in refined vegetable oil, delivering the natural green colour of leaves to fat-continuous food and cosmetic systems.

It retains the native porphyrin ring with magnesium at the centre and the long phytol ester tail that gives it its affinity for fat. Unlike water-soluble chlorophyllin salts, the molecule is essentially unmodified beyond extraction, refining, and standardisation in a carrier oil.

Common Markets Grades

Oil Soluble Chlorophyll is graded by total chlorophyll content (expressed as chlorophyll a + b) and by the choice of carrier oil.

Typical commercial loadings run from 1 to 5 percent total chlorophyll in refined sunflower, olive, or medium-chain triglyceride oil. Concentrated pastes at 10 to 20 percent are produced for in-house dilution by formulators handling large oil volumes.

Grades are also distinguished by the chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b ratio, which influences final hue: higher chlorophyll a gives a bluer green, while higher chlorophyll b shifts toward yellow-green. Source biomass (alfalfa, nettle, spinach, or silkworm-droppings extract for pharmacopoeial chlorophyll) drives this ratio.

Deodorised grades remove residual lipid-oxidation notes for cosmetic and confectionery use, and nitrogen-flushed variants are produced where extended shelf life is needed.

Regulatory Status

Oil Soluble Chlorophyll is recognised as a food colour across the major regulated markets.

In the European Union it falls under E140(i), defined as native chlorophyll, distinct from the copper complex E141. EFSA reaffirmed the safety of E140 in its re-evaluation programme for natural colours.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration treats chlorophyll differently from many jurisdictions. While dehydrated alfalfa and similar plant sources are accepted as natural colourants, chlorophyll itself is not separately listed as an approved colour additive for general food use, and labelling is typically as plant extract or vegetable juice colour.

JECFA has evaluated native chlorophylls and assigned them an acceptable status as colours. Kosher and Halal certifications are routinely available, and the material is non-GMO by source.

Manufacturing Process

Production starts with green plant biomass, most often dried alfalfa meal, nettle leaf, spinach, or mulberry leaf. Fresh material can also be used where local supply permits.

The biomass is solvent-extracted with acetone, ethanol, or hexane to release chlorophyll alongside accompanying carotenoids and lipids. The crude extract is filtered, concentrated under vacuum, and washed to remove polar impurities.

For oil-soluble production the magnesium centre is preserved by careful pH control and exclusion of acids. Saponification is deliberately avoided, since hydrolysis of the phytol ester would generate water-soluble chlorophyllides and shift the product class entirely.

The refined free-acid chlorophyll is then dissolved into the chosen carrier oil, standardised to target colour value, and protected with antioxidants such as tocopherol or ascorbyl palmitate. Final material is packaged under nitrogen in light-tight containers, since native chlorophyll is highly sensitive to light, heat, and acid.
