Red Ginseng Extract is a concentrated preparation of steamed and dried Panax ginseng root, standardised to a defined ginsenoside content.
It carries the same marker compounds as the parent red ginseng root, including Rg3, Rh1, and Rh2, alongside the major saponins Rb1, Re, and Rg1. The standardisation step distinguishes the commercial extract from a simple decoction or powdered root.

Common Markets Grades
Red Ginseng Extract is graded by total ginsenoside content measured by HPLC.
Standard commercial grades include 4 percent, 7 percent, 10 percent, 20 percent, and 30 percent total ginsenosides. Premium grades reaching 50 to 80 percent total saponins are produced for clinical material and high-end nutraceuticals.
Rg3-enriched grades are specified separately, typically at 1 to 5 percent Rg3 content with a defined ratio of S-Rg3 to R-Rg3 stereoisomers.
Three physical formats are common: a soft fluid extract at around 70 percent solids used in liquid tonics and concentrates, a paste at higher solids for tablet wet granulation, and a spray-dried free-flowing powder for capsule and beverage use.
Polysaccharide-standardised red ginseng extract is produced separately at 20 to 40 percent crude polysaccharide for immune-positioned products.

Regulatory Status
Red Ginseng Extract is the regulatory focus of the Korean functional food framework for ginseng. The Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety recognises standardised red ginseng extract for fatigue improvement, immune support, memory improvement, blood circulation, antioxidant activity, and platelet aggregation inhibition.
The Korean Pharmacopoeia carries a monograph for red ginseng extract specifying minimum content of total ginsenosides calculated as the sum of Rg1, Re, and Rb1.
In the United States the extract is sold as a dietary ingredient under DSHEA. Health Canada recognises red ginseng extract preparations under the Panax ginseng monograph in its Natural Health Products Ingredients Database.
The European Medicines Agency monograph for Panax ginseng root covers traditional herbal medicinal product use for temporary tiredness and weakness; extracts that meet the daily dose equivalents of the monograph can claim this status.
Kosher and Halal certifications are routinely available when extraction uses food-grade ethanol and the carrier matrix is free of animal-derived components.
Manufacturing Process
The starting material is graded red ginseng root, typically the tails, rootlets, and broken pieces from grading lines that produce whole-root product. Whole roots are sometimes diverted into extract production when market demand warrants.
Milled red root is extracted with ethanol-water mixtures, commonly 50 to 70 percent ethanol, in multi-stage countercurrent reflux at controlled temperature. Some producers use plain hot water for traditional-style fluid extracts.
The miscella is filtered to remove particulates, then concentrated under vacuum to a soft extract. From here the process forks. Fluid and paste grades are filled directly. Powder grades are blended with maltodextrin or other carriers and spray-dried.
Higher-potency grades pass through macroporous resin columns that retain the dammarane-type saponins while allowing sugars and water-soluble impurities to wash through. The saponin fraction is then eluted with ethanol and concentrated.
Quality control by HPLC confirms the ginsenoside fingerprint, including the markers that distinguish red ginseng (Rg3, Rh1) from white ginseng and from American ginseng.
