Seabuckthorn Juice Concentrate
Seabuckthorn juice concentrate is the evaporated juice of the berries of Hippophae rhamnoides, a hardy shrub grown across northern China, Central Asia and northern Europe. It is concentrated to between about 45 and 65 degrees Brix and is one of the most acidic fruit concentrates in commercial use.
The juice is dominated by malic and quinic acid, giving a single strength pH of roughly 2.6 to 3.3 and a titratable acidity several times that of orange juice. Vitamin C content is high and survives processing well because the low pH stabilises ascorbic acid. The orange colour comes from carotenoids, mainly beta-carotene and zeaxanthin esters, and the berry also carries flavonol glycosides based on isorhamnetin and quercetin along with a distinctive lipid fraction that separates as a pulp oil.
The concentrate is a viscous orange liquid that disperses in water but tends to separate on standing because of its carotenoid and lipid content, so it is agitated before dosing. The astringent, sharply sour flavour means it is almost always blended rather than used alone, and its low pH makes it self-preserving in most beverage systems.
We source bulk Seabuckthorn Juice Concentrate from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturer is in Inner Mongolia. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Common Markets Grades
Clear and cloudy grades are the main split. Clarified concentrate at 65 degrees Brix is used where a bright beverage is needed, while cloudy concentrate at 45 to 55 degrees Brix retains the carotenoid pigment and the pulp lipids and is preferred where colour and nutritional positioning matter. Puree and puree concentrate are traded separately for dairy and bakery fillings.
Lots are further separated by subspecies and origin, since the Chinese and Mongolian material differs from the Siberian and European cultivars in acidity and oil content. Spray dried powders on maltodextrin, vitamin C standardised grades and organic certified material are all available, and seed and pulp oils are recovered as separate products from the same processing line.
Applications
- Juice blends and nectars, where a small addition raises acidity and supplies a vitamin C claim
- Functional shots and wellness drinks positioned on vitamin and flavonoid content
- Fruit preparations for yoghurt and quark, where the sharp profile balances dairy sweetness
- Sugar confectionery and gummies needing a genuine sour fruit note without added acidulant
- Jams, fruit spreads and dessert sauces
- Alcoholic drinks including flavoured spirits, ciders and seltzers
- Herbal and botanical teas, hot and chilled, as an acid and colour source
- Bakery fillings and glazes where the low pH improves microbiological stability
- Nutritional supplements and syrups in tablet, sachet and liquid form

Regulatory Status
Seabuckthorn juice concentrate is treated as a fruit juice concentrate. In the United States it is a conventional food ingredient and its manufacture falls under the FDA juice HACCP regulation at 21 CFR Part 120, with labelling as seabuckthorn or sea buckthorn juice concentrate. In the European Union the berry has an established history of consumption, so the juice is not a novel food, and the product falls under the fruit juice framework laid down by Directive 2001/112/EC as amended, together with the general contaminants and hygiene regulations.
Nutrition claims relating to vitamin C are permitted only where the finished product meets the significant amount thresholds set by the applicable labelling rules, and health claims must be drawn from the authorised list in the market concerned. Codex covers the material through its general standard for fruit juices and nectars.
Manufacturing Process
Berries are harvested by cutting frozen branches or by mechanical shaking, then thawed under control and separated from leaves and twigs on an air stream and a destemmer. The fruit is crushed gently to avoid grinding the seeds, which would release bitter compounds and seed oil into the juice, and the mash is separated on a three-phase decanter that splits juice, pulp with its oil, and seeds in one pass.
The juice fraction is depectinised with enzyme, clarified by centrifugation and filtration or left cloudy, and concentrated on a falling film evaporator under vacuum at a low boiling temperature to protect the ascorbic acid and the carotenoids. Aroma stripped during evaporation is recovered and added back. The concentrate is pasteurised briefly, cooled, and filled into aseptic bags or frozen in drums. Pulp and seed streams go to oil extraction rather than being discarded.
