Tripotassium Citrate Monohydrate
Tripotassium Citrate Monohydrate is the hydrated form of the fully neutralised potassium salt of citric acid, with formula K₃C₆H₅O₇·H₂O.
It is a white crystalline powder used as a buffer, sequestrant, urinary alkalinizer, and sodium-free replacement for trisodium citrate in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical formulations.
We source bulk Tripotassium Citrate Monohydrate from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturer is in Shandong. For this ingredient the minimum order is 25,000 kg and a 20-foot container takes 25 MT, and a smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.
Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades
The monohydrate is the standard commercial form. The anhydrous salt is hygroscopic and reverts to the monohydrate on storage in normal humidity, so the hydrate is what shows up in most specifications and pharmacopoeial monographs.
Food-grade material meets the FCC monograph at 99 percent minimum assay on the dry basis, with limits on lead, arsenic, and oxalate. Particle size is typically a free-flowing crystalline powder with controlled bulk density for dry-blend operations.
USP and Ph. Eur. grades are produced for pharmaceutical use, particularly oral urinary alkalinizers and parenteral nutrition concentrates. Both pharmacopoeias specify the monohydrate explicitly and set tighter limits on heavy metals and microbial counts.
Granular and fine-powder variants exist, with the granular form preferred for effervescent tablet blends and the fine powder preferred for instant beverages.
Applications
- Sodium-free buffer and pH adjuster in soft drinks, sports beverages, and flavoured waters
- Sequestrant in dairy and plant-protein beverages to chelate calcium and stabilise protein systems
- Emulsifying salt in processed cheese formulations targeting reduced-sodium labels
- Potassium fortification of electrolyte and rehydration beverages
- Active ingredient in oral urinary alkalinizers for the management of uric-acid and cystine kidney stones
- Anticoagulant in blood-collection tubes when paired with citric acid
- Buffer salt in effervescent tablets and powdered drink mixes
- Component in nutritional supplements positioned as potassium sources
- Antimicrobial and colour-stabilising aid in some meat and poultry processing systems
- Buffer in cosmetics and personal-care formulations targeting mildly acidic skin-friendly pH

How We Help Source Tripotassium Citrate Monohydrate
Direct Factory Sourcing
We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.
Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer
The manufacturer sends your Tripotassium Citrate Monohydrate out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.
Free Samples and Lead Time
We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.
Combined Shipment
We can load Tripotassium Citrate Monohydrate together with other ingredients such as Sodium Acetate, Calcium Citrate and Sodium Lactate into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.
Regulatory Status
Tripotassium citrate carries the EU additive number E332(ii), and Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 permits it in food applications.
In the United States it is Generally Recognized as Safe under 21 CFR 184.1625 for use as a buffer, sequestrant, emulsifier, and nutrient supplement.
JECFA evaluates the citrates as a group and has not specified a numerical limit, reflecting the long history of safe dietary use of citric acid and its salts.
As an active pharmaceutical ingredient, potassium citrate is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an oral urinary alkalinizer, with extended-release formulations cleared under brand names including Urocit-K. Pharmacopoeial monographs in USP, Ph. Eur., and JP specify the monohydrate and set identity, purity, and water-content tests.
Halal and Kosher certifications are routinely available because both the citric acid feedstock and the neutralisation step rely on non-animal inputs.
Manufacturing Process
Tripotassium citrate monohydrate is produced by neutralising fermentation-derived citric acid with potassium hydroxide or potassium carbonate at a 1:3 acid-to-base molar ratio.
The reaction is run in a stirred reactor with controlled cooling and monitored by pH and conductivity until the trisubstituted salt is reached. The clarified concentrate is then either spray-dried or crystallised from solution to recover the monohydrate.
Crystallisation conditions are tuned to give the desired particle size, with seeding and cooling profile controlling crystal habit. The cake is centrifuged, dried at low temperature to preserve the lattice water, and screened.
The citric acid feedstock is itself produced by submerged fermentation of glucose syrup with Aspergillus niger, a route that dominates global citrate supply. Major potassium citrate producers operate in China, with additional capacity in the United States (Cargill, ADM), Belgium (Citrique Belge), and Austria (Jungbunzlauer).
