The vitamin A active is retinyl palmitate, GRAS in the United States under 21 CFR 184.1930 and approved as a fortification source in the European Union under Annex I of Regulation 1925/2006.
In the United States 21 CFR 172.115 permits BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) as a direct food additive, and it is also a generally recognised antioxidant. In the European Union, BHT carries the number E321, with the use-level limits EFSA establishes. Several Asian and Latin American markets follow the Codex maximum levels.
Some infant formula regulations restrict or prohibit BHT, which is why infant nutrition formulators typically specify the tocopherol-stabilised variant rather than this BHT grade. The grade is otherwise broadly accepted in adult fortified foods and supplement applications.
USP and Ph. Eur. monographs apply to the vitamin A active content. Halal and Kosher certifications are routinely available.
Manufacturing Process
Retinyl palmitate concentrate is pre-blended with BHT in a heated jacketed vessel under nitrogen. The active phase is emulsified into a hot aqueous solution of sucrose and modified food starch.
The emulsion is fed into a co-current spray dryer. Atomisation and rapid water evaporation produce the characteristic irregular spray-dried particles, which are collected by cyclone and bag filter, screened, and surface-treated with starch or silicon dioxide.
The BHT load is calibrated against the available oxygen exposure during the powder lifetime. Lower loadings save cost but shorten shelf life; higher loadings give two year guaranteed shelf life under typical warehouse conditions.
