Calcium D-Pantothenate is the calcium salt of the natural D-(+)-pantothenic acid stereoisomer and serves as the dominant commercial form of Vitamin B5 for food fortification, feed premix, and dietary supplement use.

It is a free-flowing white to off-white crystalline powder, slightly hygroscopic, with the molecular formula C₁₈H₃₂CaN₂O₁₀ and a molar mass of 476.53 g/mol. Only the D-isomer carries biological vitamin activity, which is why pharmacopoeial and feed-grade material carries the pure enantiomer rather than the racemate.

Industrial production starts from isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde, which condense to give pantolactone in racemic form.

Resolution of the racemate is the central step. The traditional route uses a chiral resolving agent such as quinine or brucine to crystallise the D-pantolactone selectively. Modern plants prefer an enzymatic resolution using a lactonase that hydrolyses only the unwanted L-isomer, with the residual D-pantolactone recovered for the next step.

The resolved D-pantolactone is opened with β-alanine in the presence of calcium hydroxide to give the calcium salt directly. The product is concentrated, crystallised from aqueous ethanol, and dried under vacuum to limit moisture pickup.
