The molecule (NaFeEDTA, CAS 15708-41-5, C₁₀H₁₂FeN₂NaO₈·3H₂O for the trihydrate, molecular weight 421.10 g/mol as the trihydrate) is a yellow to amber crystalline powder, freely water-soluble, with iron content of approximately 13 percent by weight.

Regulatory Status
Ferric Sodium Edetate has a focused regulatory status as a permitted iron fortificant for specific food categories rather than a general food additive.
JECFA evaluated NaFeEDTA at multiple sessions between 1993 and 2008 and concluded that it can be used safely as a source of iron for fortification programs, provided that total EDTA intake stays within the group ADI expressed as Calcium Disodium EDTA.
The U.S. FDA permits the substance as a nutrient supplement in defined food categories under 21 CFR 172.120.
The WHO Codex Alimentarius framework supports its use in condiments and flour, particularly in fortification programs targeting iron-deficiency anemia.
The substance is on the WHO list of accepted iron fortificants alongside ferrous sulphate, ferrous fumarate, and electrolytic iron. Kosher and Halal certifications are routinely available.
Manufacturing Process
Ferric Sodium Edetate is produced by controlled reaction of EDTA (or disodium EDTA) with a soluble iron(III) source under near-neutral pH conditions.
The standard route reacts disodium EDTA dihydrate with ferric chloride or ferric sulphate in aqueous solution, with gradual addition of sodium hydroxide to maintain pH between 4.0 and 5.5 and avoid precipitation of ferric hydroxide.
The reaction is essentially quantitative because of the high stability constant of the Fe(III)-EDTA complex (log K = 25.1).
The resulting amber solution is filtered through activated carbon for colour refinement, concentrated under vacuum, and crystallised by addition of ethanol or by controlled cooling.
Crystals are filtered, washed, and dried under vacuum at temperatures below 60 degrees Celsius to preserve the trihydrate form. Each lot is verified by assay, iron content, water content, free EDTA, and heavy metal contaminants.
