Zinc Lactate
Zinc Lactate is the zinc salt of lactic acid, typically sold as the trihydrate Zn(C3H5O3)2 3H2O with CAS number 16039-53-5. The trihydrate contains approximately 22 percent elemental zinc.
The compound is a white to off-white crystalline powder with mild solubility in water and high solubility under slightly acidic conditions. Its taste profile is the cleanest of the common organic zinc salts, supporting use in toothpaste and chewable formats where flavour matters.
We source bulk Zinc Lactate from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturers are in Henan. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Common Markets Grades
Zinc Lactate is produced predominantly to oral-care and food fortification markets.
Pharmaceutical grade assays at 98.0 to 102.0 percent on the anhydrous basis, with controls on cadmium, lead, mercury, and arsenic. Loss-on-drying corresponds to three molecules of water.
Oral-care grade is produced with controlled fine particle size (typically D50 of 5 to 10 microns) and tight microbiological limits for use in toothpaste, mouthwash, and chewing gum.
Food and supplement grade meets FCC requirements and is used in fortified dairy, beverages, and nutrition bars.
Spray-dried agglomerated grade is produced for direct-compression chewable tablets.
L-(+)-lactic acid derived zinc lactate is the standard form. Some suppliers also offer DL grade for cost-sensitive applications outside food and pharma.
Applications
- Toothpaste as an anti-plaque, anti-tartar, and breath-control active
- Mouthwash and oral rinses for volatile sulphur compound neutralisation
- Sugar-free chewing gum for breath freshening
- Lozenges and breath strips
- Adult and children chewable multivitamin tablets
- Fortified dairy beverages and yogurts
- Plant-based milks and nutrition drinks
- Functional bars and meal-replacement powders
- Effervescent immune-support tablets
- Topical deodorant formulations
- Cosmetic gels for sebum control

How We Help Source Zinc Lactate
Direct Factory Sourcing
We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.
Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer
The manufacturer sends your Zinc Lactate out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.
Free Samples and Lead Time
We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.
Combined Shipment
We can load Zinc Lactate together with other ingredients such as Sodium Acetate, Calcium Citrate and Sodium Lactate into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.
Regulatory Status
Zinc Lactate is approved as a nutrient and oral-care active across major regulatory frameworks.
In the United States it is GRAS for use as a nutrient under 21 CFR 184.1985 (zinc salts of fatty acids) and within the OTC anti-gingivitis monograph context. The compound is also recognised in the USP for use in supplements.
The European Union authorises Zinc Lactate as a source of zinc for food supplements under Annex II of Directive 2002/46/EC and for fortified foods under Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006. It is also permitted in foods for specific groups under Regulation (EU) No 609/2013.
The EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 covers toothpaste use. Inventory listings include INCI name Zinc Lactate.
JECFA has reviewed zinc lactate within its zinc compound assessment. Pharmacopoeial monographs exist in the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) and the Food Chemicals Codex. Halal and Kosher certifications are widely available.
Manufacturing Process
Zinc Lactate is produced industrially by reacting lactic acid with a zinc source.
L-Lactic acid is manufactured by submerged fermentation of glucose or sucrose with Lactobacillus species and arrives as an 80 to 90 percent aqueous solution. The solution is diluted with deionized water to 20 to 30 percent.
High-purity zinc oxide or zinc carbonate is added under controlled agitation at 60 to 80 degrees Celsius. The reaction is held until the slurry pH stabilises near 6.0 and excess zinc source is consumed. Carbon dioxide is liberated when zinc carbonate is the feedstock.
The clear solution is treated with activated carbon, polish filtered, and cooled to crystallise the trihydrate. The wet cake is washed with cold deionized water and dried at 40 to 50 degrees Celsius to retain the three molecules of water.
The dried material is milled to the customer particle-size target. Each batch is tested for heavy metals, residual lactate, and microbiological compliance.
