Regulatory Status

The vitamin A active is retinyl palmitate, GRAS in the United States under 21 CFR 184.1930 and approved as a fortification source in the European Union under Annex I of Regulation 1925/2006.

21 CFR 184.1724 permits sodium alginate as a food additive in the United States, and the European Union permits it as E401. Modified food starch and the antioxidant package follow their respective additive approvals.

USP and Ph. Eur. monographs apply to the vitamin A active content. The matrix is naturally sugar-free, gluten-free, and suitable for vegetarian declarations.

Halal, Kosher, and non-GMO certifications are routinely available, and vegan-suitable variants exist when the antioxidant carrier oil is plant-derived.

Manufacturing Process

Retinyl palmitate concentrate is pre-blended with the antioxidant package, then emulsified into a hot aqueous solution of sodium alginate and modified starch. The emulsion is fed into a co-current or counter-current spray dryer where hot air evaporates the water.

The droplets dry into the characteristic irregular spray-dried particles, often with a hollow or porous internal structure that reflects how fast the water evaporates. The dried powder is recovered in a cyclone or bag filter, screened, and surface-treated with starch or silicon dioxide.

Spray drying is cheaper and faster than beadlet production but typically gives slightly lower oxidative stability because of the higher internal surface area exposed to air. Producers compensate by raising the antioxidant load and by packaging under nitrogen.
