Magnesium Citrate Anhydrous
Magnesium Citrate Anhydrous is the water-free form of tribasic magnesium citrate, with the empirical formula Mg₃(C₆H₅O₇)₂ and a molar mass of 451.11 g/mol.
It is a white to off-white free-flowing powder, free of water of crystallisation. The lack of bound water gives it the highest elemental magnesium content of any commercial magnesium citrate format, around 16 percent by weight, which is the key reason formulators reach for it over the nonahydrate.
We source bulk Magnesium Citrate Anhydrous from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturers are in Hebei and Shandong. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.
Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades
Magnesium Citrate Anhydrous is graded by particle size and by application area.
Fine powder grades, typically 95 percent through 100 mesh, are intended for capsules, gummies, and direct-compression tablets where uniform blending into a dry premix is the priority.
Coarse granular grades, in the 30 to 60 mesh band, are intended for sachet sticks, dry powder beverage mixes, and effervescent tablets where flowability and low dusting matter most.
Supplement-grade material conforms to the United States Pharmacopeia magnesium citrate monograph with the anhydrous designation, with controlled limits on free citric acid, sulphate, chloride, lead, and arsenic.
Low-moisture stick-pack grades are produced when the formulation contains hygroscopic actives such as vitamin C, BCAAs, or electrolyte chlorides, since residual moisture from a hydrated salt would shorten shelf life of the finished sachet.
Applications
- Dry-blended powder sachets for daily magnesium dosing
- Effervescent magnesium tablets where the anhydrous form preserves the bicarbonate reaction shelf life
- High-load magnesium capsules where elemental magnesium per capsule volume is the limiting design parameter
- Direct-compression tablets in mineral-only and multivitamin lines
- Gummy supplement bases where added water from a hydrated salt would disrupt gel set
- Sports-nutrition recovery powders alongside electrolytes and amino acids
- Sleep and relaxation stick packs paired with glycine, L-theanine, or melatonin
- Pre-workout and intra-workout powder formulas with citrulline, beta-alanine, and creatine
- Medical food and clinical nutrition powders for tube feeding and oral rehydration
- Pediatric chewable tablets where the higher elemental load per unit weight allows smaller dosage forms

How We Help Source Magnesium Citrate Anhydrous
Direct Factory Sourcing
We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.
Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer
The manufacturer sends your Magnesium Citrate Anhydrous out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.
Free Samples and Lead Time
We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.
Combined Shipment
We can load Magnesium Citrate Anhydrous together with other ingredients such as Sodium Acetate, Calcium Citrate and Sodium Lactate into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.
Regulatory Status
Magnesium Citrate Anhydrous is approved for food, supplement, and pharmaceutical use in essentially every regulated market.
In the European Union the anhydrous form is listed by name on Annex II of Regulation (EU) 1170/2009 as a permitted mineral substance for food supplements and for foods intended for particular nutritional uses.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration treats magnesium citrate as GRAS for use as a nutrient, with no distinction in regulatory status between the anhydrous and the hydrated forms.
JECFA has reviewed magnesium salts as a group and assigned them acceptable status for use as food additives.
The United States Pharmacopeia carries a monograph for magnesium citrate that explicitly permits both the anhydrous and the nonahydrate forms, with assay reported on the dried basis. Halal and Kosher certification is routine.
Manufacturing Process
Manufacture follows the same neutralisation chemistry used for the nonahydrate, but with a drying endpoint chosen to remove all water of crystallisation.
Magnesium oxide or magnesium hydroxide is slurried in deionized water and dosed with food-grade citric acid in a 3:2 magnesium-to-citrate ratio. The reaction runs to completion as a clear viscous solution, which is filtered and decolorised through activated carbon.
The polished solution is then dried, most commonly by spray drying with a high inlet-air temperature, though drum drying and vacuum belt drying are also used. The chosen drying profile is what locks in the anhydrous structure and prevents the nonahydrate from forming in transit.
The dried powder is milled, screened, and packed under low-humidity conditions. Tight control of residual moisture, typically below 4 percent, is required for the material to be sold as the anhydrous grade rather than a partial hydrate.
