Sodium alginate from brown seaweed forms the gelling matrix in place of sucrose. Modified food starch is layered in as a wall former, and a tocopherol or BHT antioxidant package is dosed during the emulsion step.
The sugar-free alginate platform is the same family of beadlet technology used for diabetic-positioned and low-carbohydrate supplement lines. It dissolves cleanly in cold water to a fine yellow dispersion.

Regulatory Status
The vitamin A active is retinyl palmitate, GRAS in the United States under 21 CFR 184.1930 and approved as a fortification source in the European Union under Annex I of Regulation 1925/2006.
21 CFR 184.1724 permits sodium alginate as a food additive in the United States, and the European Union permits it as E401. JECFA has assigned it an acceptable daily intake not specified, and it is widely used in infant nutrition.
Modified food starch, the antioxidant package, and any added emulsifiers are conventional food-grade materials with global approvals. USP and Ph. Eur. monographs apply to the vitamin A active content.
The alginate matrix is naturally sugar-free, gluten-free, and suitable for vegetarian declarations. Vegan-suitable variants exist when the antioxidant carrier oil and any matrix proteins are plant-derived.
Manufacturing Process
Production starts with retinyl palmitate concentrate blended with the chosen antioxidant package. The oil phase is emulsified into a hot aqueous solution of sodium alginate and modified starch.
Beadlets are formed by atomising the emulsion through a single-fluid nozzle or rotating disc into a calcium chloride bath. The calcium ions cross-link the alginate guluronate blocks to form a stable gel network around each droplet, locking the vitamin A core in place.
The cured beadlets are washed, dewatered, dried under controlled humidity, and screened to size. Surface treatment with starch or talc prevents agglomeration during transport and downstream blending.
