Calcium L-Threonate
Calcium L-Threonate is the calcium salt of L-threonic acid, with formula Ca(C₄H₇O₅)₂ and CAS 70753-61-6.
The compound carries roughly 13 percent calcium by weight, lower than carbonate or citrate, and is positioned in the premium supplement segment on the basis of its threonate ligand. The molecule is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water.
We source bulk Calcium L-Threonate from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturers are in Shandong. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Common Markets Grades
Almost all Calcium L-Threonate goes into nutritional supplements, and it carries fewer grade tiers than commodity calcium salts.
The standard supplement grade is a fine, free-flowing powder meeting purity specifications in the 95 percent range as the dihydrate. Calcium content, optical rotation, and chromatographic purity are the principal commercial specifications.
A high-purity grade above 98 percent assay is produced for capsule and tablet formulators who specify tighter quality limits, and for use in clinical studies of bone and cognitive endpoints.
A granulated grade with engineered flow properties is produced for direct-compression tableting where a free-flowing presentation is needed.
The optical isomer matters. Only the L-(natural) form of threonic acid is used in commercial supplements, distinguished by levorotatory optical rotation and chromatographic comparison to a reference standard.
Applications
- Premium calcium supplements positioned on skeletal and cognitive support claims
- Bone-health formulations for adult and senior populations, often combined with vitamin D and vitamin K2
- Nootropic and brain-health supplements built around the magnesium L-threonate framework, with calcium L-threonate as a paired companion
- Multivitamin products in the premium and ultra-premium price tiers
- Chewable and effervescent calcium products where the high solubility of threonate is helpful
- Functional beverages and powdered drink mixes targeting cognitive performance
- Capsule-format calcium products in cleaner-label and reduced-excipient ranges
- Combination products with magnesium L-threonate for paired mineral support
- Sports-nutrition formulations addressing bone and joint integrity
- Clinical-nutrition and medical-food applications for bone-density support

How We Help Source Calcium L-Threonate
Direct Factory Sourcing
We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.
Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer
The manufacturer sends your Calcium L-Threonate out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.
Free Samples and Lead Time
We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.
Combined Shipment
We can load Calcium L-Threonate together with other ingredients such as Sodium Acetate, Calcium Citrate and Sodium Lactate into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.
Regulatory Status
Calcium L-Threonate is permitted for use in dietary supplements in major markets, though its regulatory status is less broadly established than that of mainstream calcium salts.
In the United States, the compound is marketed under the dietary supplement framework of DSHEA. A New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) notification was filed for the related magnesium L-threonate, and calcium L-threonate is used as a supplement ingredient without specific GRAS notification.
In the European Union, calcium L-threonate is not currently among the calcium sources explicitly listed in Annex II of Directive 2002/46/EC for food supplements. Market authorisation in EU member states therefore requires either a specific national permission or treatment under the novel food framework.
The compound is used in dietary supplements in China, where it is included in the relevant supplement ingredient catalogs.
JECFA has not specifically evaluated calcium L-threonate. Pharmacopoeial monographs are not established. Halal and Kosher certifications exist from individual manufacturers.
Manufacturing Process
Calcium L-Threonate is produced by chemical synthesis from L-ascorbic acid.
The starting material, vitamin C, is oxidised under controlled alkaline conditions to cleave the carbon chain and yield L-threonic acid as the primary product. Hydrogen peroxide is the most common oxidant, although other oxidative systems have been described.
The reaction mixture is then neutralised with calcium hydroxide or calcium carbonate. The calcium displaces the proton from the threonic acid carboxylate, and the calcium salt precipitates or is recovered by concentration and crystallisation.
The crude crystals are recrystallised from water or aqueous ethanol to remove residual oxidation by-products, particularly L-threitol and oxalates. Optical purity is confirmed by polarimetry and chromatographic comparison to a reference.
The final product is dried under vacuum at moderate temperature to preserve the crystal water of hydration, then milled to the specified particle size and packaged in moisture-barrier containers.
L-Ascorbic acid feedstock is itself produced by fermentation followed by chemical conversion, principally in China, which is also the dominant producer of finished calcium L-threonate.
