Sea Buckthorn Extract

Sea Buckthorn Extract is a dry standardised powder produced from the bright orange berries of Hippophae rhamnoides L., a hardy thorny shrub native to Eurasia and now cultivated across China, Russia, Mongolia, Finland, and parts of central Europe. The fruit is one of the densest known sources of vitamin C among temperate-zone berries, alongside a rich load of carotenoids, flavonoids, and unsaturated fatty acids.

Commercial extracts are standardised to vitamin C, total flavonoids (calculated as isorhamnetin or rutin equivalents), and in some cases carotenoid content. The powder is fine and free-flowing, pale yellow to deep orange.

We source bulk Sea Buckthorn Extract from top China manufacturers for our partners. The manufacturer is in Zhejiang. A smaller requirement can ship in a combined container with other ingredients.

Please send the grade you need, the volume and your destination port, and we will come back with a solution and a price.

Common Markets Grades

Several spec tiers cover Sea Buckthorn Extract.

Whole-fruit and juice powders carry the native vitamin C, carotenoid, and flavonoid matrix without further standardisation. These are widely used in beverage and confectionery applications.

Standardised supplement grades are quoted at 1, 2, and 5 percent total flavonoids by UV-Vis, with HPLC quantification of isorhamnetin-3-glucoside, isorhamnetin-3-rutinoside, and quercetin glycosides. Vitamin C-standardised grades run at 5 to 15 percent natural ascorbic acid.

Sea buckthorn fruit oil and seed oil are produced separately for their omega-7 (palmitoleic acid) and omega-3 content. A carotenoid-enriched grade quantifying beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, and lycopene is also available.

Organic-certified, tableting, and beverage-soluble carrier blends round out the catalog. This dry extract is commercially distinct from the aqueous juice concentrate, which is sold under a separate product specification.

How We Help Source Sea Buckthorn Extract

  • Direct Factory Sourcing

We run the whole process: selecting the manufacturer from the top Chinese food ingredient producers, negotiating the price, verifying quality, and coordinating the logistics. You deal with us instead of with several factories at once.

  • Original Packaging and Documents from the Manufacturer

The manufacturer sends your Sea Buckthorn Extract out of its own factory in the original packing, through to your destination port. The COA, COO, MSDS, TDS and any certifications reach you from the manufacturer as well.

  • Free Samples and Lead Time

We send 100 to 500 g free for your own laboratory to test and you cover only the courier, usually within 2 to 3 working days. ETD is usually within 7 to 15 days once the order is confirmed, and we check that date against the factory's own manufacturing schedule before we give it to you.

  • Combined Shipment

We can load Sea Buckthorn Extract together with other ingredients such as Astaxanthin, Dehydrated Garlic and Lutein into one 20' FCL. If your quantity is small, we can also ship LCL.

Regulatory Status

Sea Buckthorn Extract is widely accepted as a food and supplement ingredient.

In the European Union the berry has a long history of food use, particularly in Finland, the Baltic states, Germany, and parts of eastern Europe, supporting conventional food ingredient status. The extract is sold as a food supplement, and several country-level traditional herbal monographs apply.

The United States treats sea buckthorn fruit and its derivatives as food ingredients with established history of food use, and the extract is sold as a dietary supplement under DSHEA. China includes sea buckthorn in the official list of substances used as both food and traditional medicine.

Russia and Mongolia have built dedicated pharmaceutical and food categories around the berry and its oil. The INCI name for cosmetic use is Hippophae Rhamnoides Fruit Extract. Organic, Kosher, and Halal certifications exist.

Manufacturing Process

Sea buckthorn berries are mechanically harvested by branch cutting and freezing, because the soft fruit is difficult to pick by hand without crushing. Cut branches are frozen and shaken or vibrated to release the berries cleanly.

For dry extract manufacture, frozen berries are thawed and pressed, with juice, pulp, and seed fractions kept separate. The juice and pulp fraction is used for water-soluble flavonoid and vitamin C extract, while the seed fraction is processed for seed oil.

Aqueous or hydroalcoholic extraction is followed by filtration, vacuum concentration, and spray drying with a maltodextrin or gum arabic carrier. Heat-sensitive vitamin C is protected by low inlet temperatures and nitrogen-blanketed handling.

Lot release covers HPLC vitamin C, UV-Vis flavonoids, HPLC isorhamnetin glycoside fingerprinting, carotenoid profile where standardised, plus the usual heavy-metal, pesticide, and microbiology panels. The characteristic isorhamnetin-dominated flavonoid pattern is a strong authentication marker.
